The Village government represents the interests of Village residents and provides certain municipal services that are detailed below. Other services that are not provided, such as police and fire protection are provided by Montgomery County.
Garbage Collection
A contractor provides two trash collections per week (Tues. and Fri.). In addition, there is also a recyclable waste collection (Wed.) for glass, plastics, and paper, and a yard waste collection (Tues.). Finally, there are quarterly collections for major items (e.g., appliances, furniture, tires, etc.) and for chemical or special disposal items. This level of service is greater than that provided by the County.
Leaf Collection
During the fall months, the Village contracts for the collection of leafs from curbside once a week announced in the Newsletter announced in the Newsletter. Unlike elsewhere in the County, residents are not required to bag their leaves.
Street and Sidewalk Maintenance
The Village repairs and maintains its streets and sidewalks and has recently completed a major resurfacing and renovation of Kensington Parkway. In addition the Village contracts for an annual street cleaning and for snow plowing and sanding. Village service, especially during snow storms, tends to be more rapid and thorough than that provided by the County.
Tree Planting and Maintenance
An ad hoc Tree Committee oversees a program of selective tree planting on the Village right-of-way between residential properties and the streets. The Village also has responsibility for pruning and removal of Village trees when that is necessary. This program is conducted in consultation with the property owners, who share in the benefits of the program. Requests from Village residents for tree planting are welcomed. There are about 250 village trees at present. For information about trees on your property, you may look them up on the NCCV Tree Inventory .
Community Liaison
The Council and Manager arrange periodic social and informational meetings to which Village residents and others are invited to participate. Annually the local representatives to the State Legislature attend a Village meeting to discuss their activities. An informal get-together generally is held during the summer. The Manager and Council Members also represent the Village at meetings of nearby community representatives and, through membership in the Maryland Municipal League, in monitoring and influencing the State Legislature and Executive toward the adoption of policies that will be of greatest benefit to the Village.
Construction Regulations
Persons undertaking new construction are required to apply for a permit from the Council. See: Regulations , Building Permit ). The Council advertises the application in the Village newsletter and listens to any concerns that neighbors may have before deciding on the permit. County regulations also apply, but the County withholds its permits for construction in the Village until the Village has acted.
Miscellaneous
Among other activities managed by the Village government are routine maintenance of public property in the village, liaison with public safety and emergency preparedness officials, and assuring that public lighting is functioning properly.
Fire Board Representatives
The Village elects three representatives to the Chevy Chase Fire Department Board. They are elected at the Village's annual meeting. Although they are not Village officials per se, their responsibilities mesh closely with those of the Council, and a Fire Board Member often attends Village meetings.
The current Village Fire Board Representatives are Ed Asher, Demetrios Lambros , and Anne Fox..
