On Monday, 10/01/18 at 4:30 PM Read to a Dog: Chevy Chase Library is partnering with P.A.L.s (People Animals Love) to provide a read to a dog program on the first Monday of every month! Young readers will be able to share stories with a furry friend. Dogs will never judge or correct them, which allows them to really improve their reading skills. Drop in.

On Tuesday, 10/02, 9 and 16 at 10:30 AM Toddler Storytime: ** NOTE: ** We will be handing out tickets at the Information Desk 30 minutes before storytime– starting at 10:00 AM– first come, first served. Space is limited. Get up and get moving at storytime! These 20-30 minute programs are full of a diverse collection of books, songs and fun activities. They are designed to introduce your child to the culture of reading and help develop your child’s language skills. Children are encouraged to engage with the stories and activities, and their grownups to participate in the program along with the children. NEW! Free-play time after storytime for 30 minutes, from 11:00-11:30 AM. No tickets needed for free-play time.
On Wednesday, 10/03 and 17 at 10:30 AM Baby Storytime:  ** NOTE: ** We will be handing out tickets at the Information Desk 30 minutes before storytime– starting at 10:00 AM– first come, first served. Space is limited. A storytime experience for our youngest library users and their caregivers. These 20-30 minute storytimes introduce a diverse collection of books, songs, rhymes and bounces developmentally appropriate for children from birth to when they start walking. This is a wonderful way to introduce your child to the joys and culture of reading in a positive and fun atmosphere. This storytime is designed so the baby will be in their caregiver’s lap and the grownup is actively involved in the program. Free-play time after storytime for 30 minutes, from 11:00-11:30 AM. No tickets needed for free-play time.
On Wednesday, 10/03, 10, 17 and 31 at 12:00 PM Gentle Hatha Yoga: Gentle yoga is perfect for seniors, those who are just starting out with yoga, are less mobile or simply want a more relaxed yoga experience. Each class will be taught by Carolyn Ericson, a certified yoga instructor. Register here or by calling the library at (240) 773-9590. Please bring your own yoga mat and bath towel.
On Wednesday, 10/03 amd 24 at 6:00 PM Teen Writers’ Club:  The Teen Writers’ Clubs of the Maryland Writers’ Association, a growing network of after-school writing programs for aspiring writers ages 11-17, is launching a new club at the Chevy Chase Library. The purpose of the Teen Writers’ Clubs is to provide young writers with a safe and supportive meeting place where they can improve their skills under the guidance of writing mentors, get inspired by meeting guest authors, and make new friends with fellow young writers.  The club will meet twice a month and will include a wide range of creative activities such as critiques, writing exercises, and talks by guest authors. The Maryland Writers’ Association intends to publish an anthology of work from the teen writing clubs in 2019.  Shelby Settles Harper will lead the Chevy Chase Library Teen Writers’ Club. Shelby is a lawyer and citizen of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma. She is an award-winning fiction author who has practiced law at both for-profit and non-profit entities, representing Indian tribes, individual Indians, women’s rights issues, and other progressive causes. Her work can be found in Gargoyle Magazine #61, aaduna, Defying Gravity: An Anthology of Washington, DC Area Women, Divergent Voices Literary Magazine, Bethesda Magazine – First Place Fiction Winner, Outside In Literary and Travel Magazine, Tinhouse (online blog), and So to Speak: a feminist journal of language and art. Shelby serves on the National Council for the Smithsonian Museum of American Indian. She lives with her family in Chevy Chase Town.
On Thursday, 10/04, 11, 18 and 25 at 10:30 AM Handcrafters’ Meetup: Chevy Chase Library is pleased to announce a new program for anyone interested in learning a new handcraft or just gathering with other hand crafters for sharing ideas, patterns and good company! Sarah Stout, a lifetime artisan, will lead the gathering and share her extensive knowledge of all types of handcrafts. Light refreshments will be served. No registration necessary.

Join us for an intellectually stimulating exploration of some of the greatest fiction and non-fiction works published through the ages. Registration is not required. Make a crown, dog house, car, bridge, arcade game or anything else you can imagine! People all over the world will also be creating with cardboard in October.
