An elected five-member Council governs the Village of North Chevy Chase. It operates under a charter and regulations approved by the state legislature and county council, respectively. The members of the Council, all of whom are unpaid for their service, are elected at the annual Village meeting in May for two-year terms that begin June 1. To maintain continuity, two members are elected in odd-numbered years and three are elected in even-numbered years. The position that each Council member holds is decided among Council members.
Day-to-day operations of the Village are the responsibility of the Village Manager. The Manager, Robert Weesner, is the primary point of contact for persons seeking information about Village operations including building permit applications.
The Council meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 8:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the North Chevy Chase Christian Church located at 8814 Kensington Parkway in the Village except in May and August. In May the Council meeting is immediately prior to the Annual Village Meeting and the Council does not meet during the month of August. The meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend.
As specified in its Charter , the annual Village meeting is held on the first Tuesday in May. At this meeting Council members are elected and the Village tax assessment rates voted upon. All residents of the Village who are registered to vote in Montgomery County may be candidates for the Council and may vote at that meeting
